112 |
In a recent pedestrian accident in Orlando, a 9-year-old boy was sent to the hospital in critical condition. The young boy was crossing the street with his mother when a passing vehicle hit him. The accident happened as the pair attempted to cross Orange Blossom Trail near Wakulla Way. The boy was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle that hit them was driven by a 19-year-old. The young driver said he tried to brake to avoid hitting them but was unable to stop in time. The accident is still being investigation and charges are pending, reports My FOX Orlando.
The Law Offices of Jacobs and Goodman, Attorneys For The Injured employs parents of young children and recognizes the dangers our young ones face near our roadways. Often, young children are unable to comprehend the dangers of the road. It's important for parents to teach safe pedestrian habits to children at a young age to help ensure their safety as a pedestrian in the Sunshine State. Florida has recently been named as the most dangerous state in the country for fatal pedestrian accidents. Motorists are the cause of a majority of these accidents and it's important to teach children about these dangers.
According to Safe Kids USA, there are nearly 400 pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. among children who are under 14-years-old each year. In 2009, there were nearly 250 child pedestrian fatalities. About 50 percent of these fatalities were the result of back-over accidents. About 75 percent of these accidents occur at non-intersection areas. The time of day has an effect on your child's risks for a pedestrian accident, too. More than 40 percent of accidents happened from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
To help keep your children safe, the Orlando Regional Medical Center is here to offer parents with some child pedestrian safety tips. Parents are urged to review the information and to share it with their children.
Pedestrian Safety Tips:
-Always look to the left, to the right and back to the left before stepping on a roadway to cross.
-Use sidewalks whenever they're available.
-Allow drivers plenty of time to stop before you step into a crosswalk.
-Cross the street at areas that have traffic signals to help motorists to see you.
-Whenever you're going to cross a street, take the headphones off. You want all of your attention on your surroundings when steeping near vehicles.
-Avoid walking along roadways that have high speed limits and blind curves.
-Whenever walking with a child, be sure to hold their hand.
-WALK, don't run across a street.
-If you're waking when it's dark out, be sure to wear brightly-colored clothing, adhere reflective tape on your clothing and carry a flashlight to make yourself more visible to motorists.
