Unlicensed Drivers Endangering Roadways and Increasing Risks of Car Accidents in Orlando, Nation |
31 |
With unlicensed drivers oftentimes come uninsured motorists. According to recent studies from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, about a fifth of all fatal car accidents in Orlando and elsewhere involve an unlicensed or invalidly licensed driver. From 2007 to 2009, AAA estimates that of the fatal car accidents, there were about 10 percent of drivers who had a revoked or suspended driver's license, about 1 percent who had a license that was expired or canceled and roughly 5 percent who were just completely unlicensed. That means that throughout the year, more than 18 percent of all car accidents involved a driver who was not properly licensed, accounting for nearly 21,050 traffic accident fatalities.
In many of these accidents, driving without a valid driver's license wasn't the only crime committed. A good majority of these types of accidents involved impaired unlicensed drivers or unlicensed drivers who left the scene of the accident.
Our Orlando car accident attorneys understand that a car accident can be tough enough to deal with, but when you add in the fact that another driver is involved in unlicensed and possibly uninsured. the risks skyrocket. It is vital for a driver to contact an experienced attorney in the event of this kind of an accident. Getting the proper compensation that you deserve for the accident can be extremely difficult when the driver doesn't have the assistance from an insurance company.
From 2000 to 2007, there were nearly 152,000 drivers who were involved in fatal car accidents. Of these drivers, nearly 130,500 reportedly had a valid driver's license. Nearly 10,000 had a revoked or suspended driver's license, more than 6,700 were unlicensed, nearly 1,500 had an expired or canceled driver's license and the status of the driver's licensed of nearly 4,000 were unknown.
In the state of Florida, there are about 15.5 million legally-licensed drivers and more than 2 million who currently have suspended or revoked licenses. Still, officers throughout the state are reporting that there are many offenders behind the wheel.
Nationwide, about 1 in every 10 motorists drive illegally, says Robert Scopatz of Data Nexus Inc. AAA is saying that about two-thirds of those who have been barred from the road keep driving.
"Unlicensed drivers need to be prevented from driving," says David Willis of AAA.
Safe, licensed drivers need to protect themselves from the dangerous and irresponsible drivers. When you're involved in a car accident with an improperly licensed driver who is also uninsured, fighting for the deserved compensation can be quite a battle. Florida's traffic laws are extremely complex and an experienced and knowledgeable accident and traffic lawyer is vital if you've been involved in one of these unfortunate accidents.
