Car Accidents in Orlando and Elsewhere Fewer in 2011; Risks Still Alarming |
150 |
The 2011 statistics are in and report that there were nearly 2,400 fatalities because of car accidents in Orlando and elsewhere throughout the state, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle (FLHSMV). This is the lowest number of traffic accident fatalities in the state since 1978. While this does illustrate a decrease from the number of roadway fatalities in 2010, with 2,444, it's important to point out that a number of fatal accident types continue to be alarmingly high.
"While the six-year downward trend is encouraging, we continue our strategic efforts to drive down the number of crashes in Florida and the number of injuries and fatalities that come as a result," said Julie Jones, FLHSMV Executive Director.
Our Orlando car accident attorneys understand that we only saw a decrease of only about 70 roadway fatalities from 2010 to 2011. While yes, the decrease is in fact a reason to celebrate, we still need to remember that thousands died during the year and we need to continue to focus on ways to make our roadways safer for everyone. Take pedestrians for example. Florida continues to be the most dangerous state in the country for fatal pedestrian accidents. The truth of the matter is that traffic accidents continue to be the number one cause of death for residents aged 4- to 34-years-old.
While drivers can pledge to practice the safest of driving habits throughout the New Year, it's important to remind Florida drivers that weather conditions can change in a matter of minutes. Drivers are asked to adjust driving skills to accommodate the current road and weather conditions. The FLHSMV is here to offer drivers tips to help increase roadway safety in Florida weather.
Tips for Driving through Fog:
-Be on the lookout for slow-moving or parked cars.
-Listen for the traffic that you cannot see. Open windows for better hearing.
-Curb distractions to allow for better focus on our roadways.
-Use your windshield wipers and your defrosters. These devices can help to maximize your visibility.
-Always signal your turns to let know other drivers about your desired maneuvers.
Tips for Driving through Severe Weather Conditions:
-Don't move. Try staying where you are. Don't drive if weather conditions are too dangerous.
-Slow it down. Roads are slick during and after storms. Slowing down will decrease your risks of hydroplaning.
-Wear a seat belt. Seat belts can significantly reduce your risks of being injured or killed in the event of a traffic accident.
-Be cautious of high winds.
-Turn around; Don't drown. Never drive through flooded areas or areas with standing water, even if you think you're familiar with the area.
Tips for Driving through Smoke:
-Slow down. Your visibility is hindered in these areas and you require more time to react.
-Turn on your windshield wipers and your low-beam headlights.
-If the fog becomes too thick for you to see, pull off of the roadway and stop.
-Make sure you have enough room between your car and the car in front of you to make a safe exit if need be.
-Report the hazard to officials.
